The History Of Ethereum

The genesis (first) block of Ethereum (ETH) went live on 30 July 2015. Before that point, it had been described in a whitepaper by Vitalik Buterin in 2013. Vitalik Buterin and the co-founders of Ethereum used crowd-funding in 2014 to help achieve the July 2015 launch of the Cryptocurrency. The other notable co-founders alongside Buterin were Gavin Wood (who coded the first implementation), Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, Mihai Alisie, Joseph Lubin & Amir Chetrit. In total there were 8 co-founders (more than most other Crypto projects).

Their goal at launch was to become a global platform for decentralized applications. By their own words on their website, Ethereum is a “community-run technology.” The whitepaper states 5 key principles in the design of Ethereum:

– Simplicity

– Universality

– Modularity

– Agility

– Non-discrimination and non-censorship

Much like Bitcoin being a pioneer for Cryptocurrency and Blockchain, Ethereum is unique and has played a huge role in the development of these technologies. The concept of smart contracts originated in Ethereum. Smart contacts are programs that self-execute what is necessary to complete an agreement between parties online. The idea behind this is to remove the need for intermediates in contracts and also reduce their transaction costs as a result. The Ethereum platform was therefore designed to execute these smart contacts using the blockchain, which added further to the benefits of a smart contract.

In addition to this, Ethereum’s blockchain can host other Cryptocurrencies. These other Cryptocurrencies are referred to as “tokens” via the use of Ethereum’s ERC-20 compatibility standard. ERC-20 tokens have gone on to be the most common use of Ethereum so far. Around 280k+ ERC-20 tokens have been launched so far, and a lot of the most well-known or up-and-coming Cryptocurrencies (Chainlink and Uniswap as just some examples).

As Blockchain and smart contracts technology develop, Ethereum could be seen as likely to develop further with this. Especially as more sectors and industries utilize the potential they offer…
